'Do you still believe the election was rigged?' Sky's markaustintv asks Jacob Chansley, who stormed the US Capitol in 2021, if he still believes the 2020 election was rigged following Trump's indictment 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233
"Donald J Trump did knowingly conspire... to defraud the United States by using dishonesty"It's been nearly 1,000 days since braying crowds poured into the Capitol building in Washington DC in support of Donald Trump.
The indictment outlines how Trump and his co-conspirators allegedly sought to misuse their authority to subvert the transfer of power and keep him in the White House for another four years. Mr Smith said his office"will seek a speedy trial" - a clear acknowledgement of the upcoming presidential election and the prospect of a victorious Trump pardoning himself.
It will not be difficult for prosecutors to clear that hurdle because congressional certification of election results is plainly an official proceeding, experts say. There are at least 16 references to tweets and Twitter in the indictment document, some posts by the former president himself and others are posts by other users that he retweeted.
In a tweet on 3 December, 2020, Trump talks of"ballot stuffing by Dems" and claimed he had won the state. On 5 January, 2020, Trump again urged his supporters to head to DC and also set the"false expectation" that vice-president Mike Pence had the authority to reverse the election outcome at the certification proceedings, the indictment says.
"Instead," the indictment says,"the defendant issued two tweets that did not ask rioters to leave the Capitol but instead falsely suggested that the crowd at the Capitol was being peaceful."
