An RTE Investigates documentary, 'Inside The Protests,' reveals the escalating violence and racial abuse that forced the developer of the Coolock Crown Paints site to flee the country. The program captures footage of anti-immigration protests turning into riots, with workers threatened, fires lit, and clashes with gardai.
The developer of the Coolock Crown Paints site earmarked to house asylum seekers was forced to flee the country at the height of protests over safety fears for himself and his family.
Workers were threatened while one security worker was even knocked unconscious, fires were lit and there were clashes with gardai. RTE, which was inside the Crown Paint factory that morning, captured footage that showed how the events unfolded. “Burn, baby burn,” one man chanted. The cameras later captured the moment a petrol bomb was thrown on site. The documentary showed how the security team and the staff at the Coolock site continuously called for the Gardai while they were under siege.
It was early evening before order was fully restored in the area. But flares of violence continued for several days and a number of people are currently before the courts as a result.
