Plans for the major development were previously rejected by the government's Planning Inspectorate

Previously rejected plans to build 250 homes on land in Whittle-le-Woods have been approved despite questions over school places and road safety.

Local councillors spoke against the proposal - which includes 30% affordable homes - citing overdevelopment fears and the existing strain on amenities. The issue of school places was repeatedly raised, with County Councillor Mark Clifford saying that local facilities were already oversubscribed and that Lancashire County Council was unable to explain where an apparently surplus of places exists.

“WLW is close to J8 of the motorway and already feels that commuter strain. We shouldn’t be making it harder for the residents by building more and drawing more commuters straight to the village.” Concerns were also raised over the impact of more cars on the roads which was described as an “accident waiting to happen”.

She said the development will also lead to measures previously agreed by the Planning Inspectorate such as new bus stops, warning signs, and ‘slow’ markings and that the developer will make an annual £150k contribution five years contribution to improve bus services.
