The Diamondbacks, who own the No. 2 overall pick in Sunday’s draft, were waiting to find out what the Baltimore Orioles decide to do with the top selection.
SAN DIEGO — On the eve of the draft, the baseball world continued its wait to find out whom the Baltimore Orioles would take with the No. 1 overall pick, a decision that will have a direct impact on the Diamondbacks, who own the second pick.
Mock drafts by Baseball America and The Athletic project the Orioles to go with Oklahoma high school shortstop Jackson Holliday, the son of former All-Star slugger Matt Holliday. ESPN expects the Orioles to take Georgia high school outfielder Druw Jones, the son of former All-Star Andruw Jones. Most industry sources seem to agree that if Jones is still on the board after the first pick, he won’t get past the Diamondbacks at No. 2. He is widely regarded as the top player available, a smooth-fielding center fielder with power and speed.
Another possible reason the Orioles could pass on Jones is because they prefer a player closer to the majors who could quickly join their current wave of prospects at or near the big league level. The Diamondbacks wound up with the second overall pick after they won the final game of last season on a walkoff homer by Josh VanMeter, tying them with the Orioles for the worst record in the majors. The Orioles were awarded the top pick by virtue of a tiebreaker.
