Till director and co-writer Chinonye Chukwu spoke to Screen Rant about how Danielle Deadwyler & Jalyn Hall were cast as Mamie and Emmett Hill, and how even all her preparation could not prepare her for the full story of Mamie's fight:
With its premiere this weekend, Till aims to bring difficult conversations about race relations and social justice to the forefront. While the biopic opens in 1955 and lays the groundwork for Emmett Till's cruel murder, the crux of the story lies in his mother Mamie's dedication to getting justice. The fact that her fight was neither easy nor altogether victorious is a point the film raises by simply existing and allowing viewers to connect the dots to society today.
Chinonye Chukwu: That decision I made was an extension of Mamie's decision that she made in 1955. I knew that I had to honor her in that way and honor that choice that she made—and do so in a way that was intentional, deliberate, and sparing as well. She was cast, and we spent a few months diving into the script. We discussed and went through every single emotional beat and nuance throughout the script multiple times, and she dove so deeply into the research. By the time she was on set, she had such an inherent understanding of who Mamie was, and what her journey was throughout the film.
