The Dispatch Backyard Garden Award winners have been announced. Taking Best in Show: Tricia Brown of Lancaster with her 'Honey Bee Haven' garden.

You might call Tricia Brown’s garden the bee’s knees.

“I couldn’t wait to get my first garden,” Brown said. “I probably spent 20 years on paper just designing this garden waiting till a time that I could put it in.”Gardening became focus during pandemic Of special importance to Brown was making sure her garden was buzz-worthy: Years ago, she had noticed that she had been seeing fewer and fewer bees when she was out and about, so she took several steps to make sure her own garden was attractive to bees.“I read that the honeybees are attracted to purple,” said Brown, who also assured that water features, such as bowls, were shallow so that the bees wouldn’t drown.

The church has maintained a garden for more than two decades: The produce it produces is harvested for the Help My Neighbors Food Pantry. About 10 people from the church work on the garden in addition to Hoagland; since the space isn’t surrounded by a fence, they avoid planting things likely to attract rabbits or deer.
