Well known former Kilkenny GAA player DJ Carey is noted for his career in the Irish sporting world, and comes from a family which placed an emphasis on sport.The family have faced tragedy, as one of DJ’s brothers sadly died in a farming accident when they were children.“I suppose what many people wouldn’t realise or know is that we had a serious tragedy when I was very young,” DJ told Ivan Yates on Newstalk’s The Hard Shoulder.
“My father was cleaning out the machine and he went climbing up to get to him and got caught in a PTO.” The family also faced a devastating loss, when a few years prior to the farming accident, parents John and Maura Carey lost another one of their sons to cot death. As a camogie player, Catriona was a member of the Clara GAA team that won the Féile na nGael Camogie Division 1 competition in 1992.She is also renowned for her skills at hockey, as she earned 72 caps for the Ireland women's national field hockey team, including at the 2005 Women's EuroHockey Nations Championship in Dublin.
