New research has been released on the risks of drinking alcohol before a flight

Holidaymakers looking to kick-start their vacation with a drink might want to think twice, as experts warn that indulging in alcohol before flying could have serious consequences. Recent studies indicate that dozing off on an aircraft after consuming alcohol can increase the strain on your heart due to lower oxygen levels in the blood.

Cardiac specialists are now urging airlines to rethink how much alcohol is available on flights, especially those covering long distances. Dr Eva-Maria Elmenhorst from the German Aerospace Centre in Cologne highlighted the risks, particularly for those with health concerns: "The situation might be different for passengers with pre-existing medical conditions. Their oxygen saturation might be low to begin with and then drop to even lower levels.

Within each group, half consumed what equals to two cans of beer or two glasses of wine- this left the other half as the non-alcohol consumers. Having no alcohol intake and sleeping in usual conditions resulted in consistent levels of blood oxygen around 96% and a snooze heart rate of 64 beats per minute . Yet alcohol consuming participants exposed to flight-like conditions recorded a drop in blood oxygen levels to an average of 85% with heart rates increase to about 88 bpm during sleep.
