Joe Musgrove throws a lot of strikes, Dodgers hit enough of them to take lead on way to eighth straight series win over Padres

Joe Musgrove had one of the stranger bad starts a pitcher can have on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park. And his efficiently rough outing got the Padres on their way to a familiar result — another loss and another series loss to the Dodgers.

“We’re not playing bad,” said Jake Cronenworth, whose second-inning homer gave the Padres a 1-0 lead. “They’re obviously the team they are this year ... so you can’t expect to sweep them. You’d like to. You’d like to get some wins and win a series, but when they’re playing like the way they are and pitching like the way they are it’s pretty tough.

Luis Garcia, Tim Hill and Craig Stammen combined to allow six runs in the seventh. The Dodgers added a run in the ninth off Wil Myers.Cronenworth jumped on one of them, the first pitch he saw in the second inning, and launched it to the Barrell Deck beyond right field to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Musgrove had thrown 49 pitches, 38 of them strikes. Of the 13 batters he had faced, 11 had seen a first-pitch strike.
