As an amputee and a wheelchair user, luberachi has had to learn to approach making a spa appointment with the same preparation applied to a military operation. Here, she reflects on why access to self-care is so essential to the disabled community.

Many disabled people live with indescribable and sometimes undetectable pain. At any given moment, we are vulnerable to degrading and patronising comments from strangers or loved ones. The combination of these things can feel like a pressure cooker with no release, causing our brains to signal messages of distress to every part of our body. Even if we have no sensation in our limbs, they still receive that message, and we need to find ways to tell them that everything is okay.

Exclusion is more than just unfair or upsetting, it’s a system of wilful neglect that runs rampant in every single industry. In this case, it’s blatant discrimination that’s disguised by scented candles, atmospheric lighting and panpipe music. I have been lucky in finding massage therapists, hairdressers, eyebrow technicians and acupuncturists who have taken the time to learn about working with disabled clients. They practise empathy, and share information about their craft so that I feel comfortable during the treatment. I have also been lucky to have specialists offer home treatments if their rooms are inaccessible, but there is something about visiting a place that has been designed with serenity and decadence built in.
