The Dolphins will start QB Teddy Bridgewater when they face the Patriots on Sunday, head coach Mike McDaniel announced. Starter Tua Tagovailoa is in concussion protocol for the second time this season.
after the Dolphins placed him in concussion protocol for the second time this season, the NFL said in a statement Wednesday.Video shows the third-year QB’s head striking the ground during a hit in the second quarter of Miami’s matchup against Green Bay. Tagovailoa wasn’t checked for a concussion at the time and played the remainder of the game. However, his effectiveness was diminished from that point on, and in the fourth quarter, he threw interceptions on three consecutive possessions.
Earlier this season, the NFL and NFLPA launched a joint investigation after medical personnel failed to rule Tagovailoa out for the remainder of a Week 3 game against following the quarterback’s head hitting the ground on a shove. Tagovailoa displayed signs of gross motor instability, yet he missed just three offensive snaps before returning to the game. The Dolphins said he had suffered back and ankle injuries., Tagovailoa’s head struck the ground again on a hit, and he had to be taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to the hospital. Tagovailoa missed the next two games while recovering from concussion symptoms.
The investigation following both incidents resulted in the NFLPA firing one of the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultants assigned to monitoring players for signs of concussions and changes to the protocol.
