Familiar faces are back in a new series

I remember way back during the infamous Dexter series finale, hearing that Showtime actually forbid the writers from killing Dexter, something that only made sense if they had plans to bring him back at some point., that certainly did not seem like a good idea at the time, given that the last few years of Dexter were absolute trash after the brilliance that was the first few seasons.

But Showtime went ahead with it, got back key cast members and rolled with the idea that Dexter was now hiding out somewhere remote and cold in the “lumberjack” finale. What I was not expecting, however, was Dexter: New Blood to actually be a return to form after all these years, and actually come close to redeeming what is viewed as one of the worst TV series finales of all time. Surprisingly, it’s getting that job done.

Part of the reason this works is because Showtime has not let Scott Buck, the showrunner who destroyed everything those last few years, anywhere near this project, and instead has brought back Clyde Phillips, the showrunner back when it was actually good. He left after season 4 and well, that’s when things went downhill fast.

Dexter: New Blood has Dexter dealing with the merging of his past and present lives when his long lost son Harrison finds him. He hasn’t killed anyone in a decade, but that changes quickly, though he finds himself entangled with another serial killer in town soon enough. Harrison, meanwhile, is beginning to show signs of a propensity for violence as well, being “born in blood” like Dexter was after the murder of his mother.
