as part of a two-year pilot to broaden access. The drugs, which act as appetite suppressants, have been proven to work in clinical trials and demand for them has soared in recent months.said the drugs are now part of the Government’s arsenal in combating soaring obesity rates.
“The reality is more and more of these drugs are coming on stream and they are going to be part of our arsenal, or one of the tools, that we have to tackle and help people with obesity, and to make healthier life choices,” he told MPs.However, they are only effective for as long as you are taking them, unless you move to change your lifestyle and behaviour.
“We want to use the drugs as an enabler to get them to a place where they can manage their own weight. Now for some people that may be difficult, others it may not, but [the drugs] will be a helping hand.” Wayne David, Labour MP for Caerphilly who organised the debate, warned the minister there was a “real danger” of placing too much emphasis on the drugs as a means to lose weight. “It can be in addition to other measures, but those other measures are critically important,” he said.in the world – more than a quarter of adults in the UK are obese and a further 38 per cent are overweight but not obese, according to national estimates.
