Donal Ryan's novel 'Heart, Be at Peace' has been named the winner of the An Post Irish Book of the Year 2024, Judges praised its portrayal of modern Irish society and Ryan's masterful prose.
Donal Ryan 's novel, Heart, Be at Peace, has been awarded the prestigious An Post Irish Book of the Year 2024. A unanimous decision by the judges, who included Maria Dickenson, Madeleine Keane, Elaina Ryan, Alex Clark, and Cyril McGrane, praised the book's lyrical portrayal of modern Irish society. Heart, Be at Peace weaves together 21 voices, capturing the passions, vulnerabilities, and sorrows of an Irish town with both compassion and clarity.
This marks Ryan's second major literary accolade, having previously won the Book of the Year Award in 2012 and the Novel of the Year Award in 2020. Irish Times reviewer Sarah Gilmartin lauded Ryan's masterful prose, comparing his work to that of the renowned Irish writer John McGahern. Ryan, originally from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, currently resides just outside Limerick City with his wife and children
