A Gaeltacht primary school in Donegal has renamed itself Scoil Naomh Carlo Acutis in honour of the first millennial saint, who was canonised by Pope Leo XIV and known for using his computer coding skills to spread his Catholic faith.
A Gaeltacht primary school in Gort a' Choirce, Donegal, has officially adopted Saint Carlo Acutis as its patron and will now be known as Scoil Naomh Carlo Acutis, previously operating under the name Gort a' Choirce NS.
Saint Carlo Acutis, who was born in London in 1991 and raised in Milan, became widely recognised for his exceptional computer coding abilities, which he used from a young age to build websites dedicated to spreading his Catholic faith. He was canonised by Pope Leo XIV in the previous year during the first canonisation ceremony of his pontificate, earning him the historic distinction of being the first saint of the millennial generation.
His body was originally beatified by Pope Francis in 2020 and was subsequently moved to Assisi, where it remains a popular destination for pilgrims from around the world. To mark the school's official renaming, Monsignor Anthony Figueiredo, a Vatican-assigned priest who travels internationally to share the message of Saint Carlo Acutis, is scheduled to bring the saint's relics to the naming celebration this coming weekend.
Bishop of the Raphoe Diocese, Niall Coll, will celebrate a special mass during his first official visit to Teach Pobail Chríost Rí in Gort a' Choirce on Sunday, where he is expected to address the congregation, particularly the school children, about how Saint Carlo Acutis used his technical skills to serve others and share his faith. School Principal Patricia Uí hArlaigh expressed her enthusiasm for the new patron, stating that the school community felt honouring him would be a fitting tribute.
She noted that in a contemporary world where many aspire to become influencers, it is inspiring that Carlo Acutis has been called God's Influencer, and she believes his story will have a meaningful influence on the pupils. The Vatican has officially recognised Saint Carlo Acutis for two miracles, one involving the healing of a Brazilian child and another concerning a Costa Rican student who was seriously injured in an accident.
In both cases, relatives had prayed to Acutis for his intercession, contributing to his path toward sainthood. The adoption of Saint Carlo Acutis as patron saint reflects the school's commitment to connecting modern youth with a figure who blended contemporary technological skills with deep religious devotion, offering a relatable role model for the digital age
