Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe is set to address the Dáil after Taoiseach's Questions on Tuesday afternoon
On Tuesday the Minister will speak for ten minutes and each opposition group will have six minutes for a Q&A.Earlier Mr Donohoe said he wanted to make a further Dáil statement in relation to matters raised last night.
He told the Dáil this morning that he would do so at the earliest opportunity and would"revert to the Ceann Comhairle".In his statement to the Dáil yesterday, Minister Donohoe said that during a review"in recent weeks" he was made aware for the first time that"a personal payment" of €1,100 had been made to workers who put up election posters in 2016.
He acknowledged that he made a"clear mistake" in not including the cost in his election expenses, something for which he apologised.Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty pointed out to Tánaiste Micheal Martin that he had sacked Barry Cowen over his refusal to answer Dáil questions when he was embroiled in controversy in 2020.Mr Doherty called on Minister Donohoe to answers Dáil questions in"real time", adding that a statement does not cut it.
He added that others including Leo Varadkar and Helen McEntee had put themselves forward for such questioning during previous controversies. He said it is essential that TDs follow the rules around election spending and political affairs. The Tánaiste confirmed that Mr Donohoe would come before the Dáil again, but said there is a"genuine issue" around having a parallel process to SIPO's work.
He suggested there was a"problem" with how the opposition wanted to proceed and he indicated that the Dáil could examine the matter after SIPO completed its work.Mr Doherty later said it is completely unacceptable that Minister Donohoe will not appear before the house until next week.
