Paschal Donohoe warns potential RTE bailout cannot fully match licence fee revenue

Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe has warned that the Government will not be able to fully bridge the gap in RTÉ’s finances if licence fee revenue continues to plummet.

The number of people who bought a TV licence in the first week of July fell by 27% compared to the same period last year. This fell further to 31% in the second week of the month. While a Government bailout has not been ruled out, ministers have said that the situation in RTÉ will be monitored before any decision is made.

He said that conversations about funding will be held with Media Minister Catherine Martin in the coming months. “I know Minister Martin will be bringing that forward to me and has already talked about the importance of it. I will work with her in relation to that.
