But, on the whole, in the serious field of horology, the colour field has remained pretty stable since the birth of the wristwatch. Black, white, silver and champagne have remained the go-to dial colours, with recent years seeing a rise in the popularity of blue, green and burgundy. During the global lockdowns of the past two years, however, all that changed.
“The romantic in me would really like to believe that this is a response to the pandemic-induced gloom of the 2020s,” says Mark Toulson, head of watch buying at the Watches of Switzerland Group. “Practically though, it takes a year to 18 months for big brands to produce a new colour. Many of the current watch brand CEOs are relatively young and have come from backgrounds other than watches such as fashion, luxury and cars.
John Robinson of David M Robinson agrees. “Coloured and patterned dials have always appealed to committed watch collectors, in particular those seeking the iconic pieces of the past, but clients are now becoming more willing to experiment and be daring. Bold coloured dials allow the wearer to inject personality into their collection. A number of brands have introduced such dial variations over the past three years – a burst of colour after a dark period in the world.
