‘Now is the right time and I’m happy I’m going out on my own terms'
Limerick-based Michael Hourigan, who trained top steeplechasers Dorans Pride and Beef Or Salmon, has announced his retirement after over 50 years of holding a license.
Hourigan was one of the leading trainers in Ireland during the 1990s and 2000s, when Dorans Pride catapulted him to prominence through his 1995 Stayers Hurdle success under Shane Broderick at the Death of a jockey: ‘Michael O’Sullivan was full of ambition, full of passion ... he was just a beautiful person’Those successes included a hat-trick of wins in the Irish Gold Cup, and he routed the triple-Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate at Leopardstown in the Lexus Chase during Christmas 2004.
