Dorset Police is is still in the dark about extra Government funding to help cope with an influx of male migrants due to be housed on a floating barge in the region in less than two weeks’ time, the head of the force has said
“I believe that we’ve always had an issue from day one around the rapidity of this and the lack of strategic planning at the start,” he said.
Dorset Police has raised specific concerns around the vetting of asylum seekers due to board the ship, as well as the potential impact on the local community. Richard Drax, the Conservative MP for South Dorset, said potential large-scale protests could harm the local tourist economy, which sees millions of people flock to the region each summer.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “The pressure on the asylum system has continued to grow and requires us to look at a range of accommodation options which offer better value for the British taxpayer than expensive hotels.
