Downton Abbey’s Daisy star Sophie McShera on ‘powerful’ new role in The Gallows Pole
After years of playing a humble scullery maid in Downton Abbey, Sophie McShera was thrilled to land a “lady of the manor” role in a gripping new period drama.
Taking on the lead in the three-part series is This Is England actor, Michael Socha, 35, who felt the role was hugely important. “I took this part so seriously, more so than any other job in my life,” says Michael. “I felt good wearing them. Shane and I imagined David as quite a basic man of the people so we didn’t go down the flamboyant route.”
While the show is based on a book and a true story, Michael and Sophie had a lot of say in their characters, as did their director Shane. “I think in the book David’s a scary bloke!” says Michael. “He’s physical – he’s quite a scary presence. But I think Shane was keen on not drawing on that potentially one-dimensional aspect.”
