Family-owned Alamo Music Center has been in tune with San Antonio musicians for almost a century

It has had satellite stores over the years, including piano stores in San Antonio malls as well as an outpost in Corpus Christi. Those stores shuttered when business declined. The company is starting to expand again, opening piano stores in St. Louis, Mo., and Leawood, Kan. A small warren off the piano showroom holds a workshop where technicians install equipment that turns pianos into player pianos, as well as the studio where videos are filmed for the business’The channel, which has 110,00 subscribers, streams videos focused on guitar, keyboards and piano; accordion soon will be added to the mix. Videos include comparisons of different brands, tips on playing and maintaining instruments, and other topics.
“They really went out of their way to reach out to suppliers and help with that,” said Tracy Cowden, chair of the music department at UTSA. “It would have taken us a long road to do it on our own. It was a very neighborly thing to do.”
