Consultant physician and endocrinologist Dr Mary Ryan dealt with the sudden death of her husband Eamon Prendiville in 2013.

She invited RSVP into her beautiful home in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary where she tells us about her new book It’s Probably Your Hormones, as well as candidly and bravely discussing the realities of life after grief.

Shock protects you and you just continue on autopilot because you don’t have time to process. We had only moved in here and decorated our beautiful home which had been a busy and stressful undertaking because it was a listed building so it was a tough time. Poor Eamon died suddenly and all of our dreams and visions vanished.I wanted to make sure that they got everything they needed while looking after my patients too.

Even though I love my career, my children are the best part of my life and always have been. Eamon would be very proud of them because they are good, respectful kids, who are enjoying life and are happy. They are very close and that is one thing I want for my children.I am blessed with great energy and I come from a lifestyle of healthy eating – my mother is a teacher and my father’s a farmer. I would always be in bed early and I know when to crash to allow my body to rest.
