Peter McGarry said he thought his father, Malcolm, was an intruder

A drink and drug-fuelled son beat his elderly and disabled father to death in the victim’s own home in what a judge called a "savage attack”. Peter McGarry rained punch upon punch down on his 76-year-old father, Malcolm, before using his foot or a weapon on the pensioner.

“It was an avoidable death and you have deprived yourself and, more importantly, other people of a man of value and great esteem, as far as they are concerned. On this night you exploded. You believed, under the influence, there were three people in the room. The prosecutor said she caught a taxi with her son and a friend of the son and arrived at the bungalow. Mr Aspden said: "The defendant answered the door and was covered in blood and in the sitting room was his father with severe facial injuries. He was unconscious. The scene itself was truly grotesque and macabre.

Mr Aspden said a Home Office pathologist gave a cause of death as multiple injuries with Mr McGarry having suffered a number of fractures to his face. He said: "There is evidence of the use of either a weapon or shod foot as well as him being repeatedly punched to the face. He had taken a truly savage beating."
