Drivers caught handling phones to get £200 fines and six points from TODAY
New laws make it illegal for drivers to handle a phone for any reason. Touching the screen to scroll a music playlist, browse the internet, take a photograph or play a mobile game are now punishable by £200 fine and 6 points.
The stringent rules will also apply when stopped at a red light or stuck in traffic. Exemptions only for 999 calls and phone payments at tolls and drive-throughs. New laws don't apply for touching a device in a secure mount on the windscreen. Motorists CAN be punished for touching a phone in a cradle under different rules
