Drivers beware - this is what to look out for

Temperatures will drop to as low as minus 5 degrees as the country braces for a cold Atlantic blast this week. Snow, hail, frost and freezing fog are all set to hit in the coming days.The Road Safety Authority has advised road users to prepare for these hazardous conditions.“If the road looks polished or glossy it could be, ‘black ice’ one of winter's worst hazards” Warns the RSA.

“It is nearly transparent ice that often looks like a harmless puddle or is overlooked entirely. The sheltered and shaded areas on roads, under trees and adjacent to high walls are prone to black ice." Those driving during icy road conditions should: They add that drivers should watch out for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and allow extra space when overtaking them.The RSA says the difficulty with hail showers is their unpredictability and localised nature. As a hail shower tracks across the country it deposits a narrow band of ball bearing sized hailstones on the ground.

The RSA has the following advice for drivers who encounter hailstones: Those driving in sleety and snowy conditions are advised to: Take note as the cold weather is here to stay for the time being, as the country braces itself for a cold Atlantic blast.READ MORE
