Drogheda United manager Kevin Doherty believes the club's transition to full-time football will significantly improve their competitiveness in the Premier Division this year. He highlights the benefits of controlled training schedules and the ability to attract new talent. However, the move has also resulted in the departure of some senior players who prefer part-time arrangements.

Drogheda United boss Kevin Doherty says the switch to full-time football has robbed him of an excuse for poor results - but has given him hope that the Boynesiders can be more competitive in the Premier Division this year.

“There is one excuse gone,” he joked, before adding: “It’s great. Everyone else is full time so we’re not gaining an advantage on anyone by being full time, we just don’t have that disadvantage anymore.“I hate using the word control but we do have more control of the players time now, when they rest etc.

“It probably wouldn't have mattered in that one, but we have a loan from Swansea and one from Mansfield, so it certainly helps when you’re proposing moves to clubs.”“As the season goes we will probably be doing a similar level of training than what we did, but it certainly gives us more time for analysis and set pieces.
