Two women were granted emergency protection orders by the Dublin District Family Court following distressing testimonies of domestic abuse, ranging from coercive control and medical neglect to severe physical violence.
The Dublin District Family Court recently became the setting for several harrowing testimonies as individuals sought emergency legal protection from partners and former partners. In one particularly distressing instance, a woman appeared before Judge John Brennan to request a protection order against her husband, citing a climate of fear and systemic coercive control within her home.
The core of her grievance involved the husband's refusal to acknowledge the severity of their child's medical condition. The woman testified that the couple had nearly lost their child to anorexia, yet the father remained steadfast in his denial that the condition was a legitimate mental illness. Instead, he allegedly accused the child of deliberately refusing food to destroy the family unit, effectively placing the child through a period of intense emotional suffering.
Beyond the medical neglect and denial, the woman described a pattern of behavior indicative of deep-seated coercive control. She detailed how the husband exerted dominion over her movements and social interactions, particularly during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. She alleged that she was forbidden from having her children vaccinated against the virus, as the husband held defiant views against government health regulations and believed in various conspiracies regarding the nature of the lockdowns.
The tension in the household extended to extreme financial monitoring, where the woman recounted a specific incident in which the husband became threatening after she spent a mere four euros from a joint account to buy a hot chocolate for their child. The woman expressed a profound sense of insecurity, noting that her younger child had even pleaded with her to make the father leave the home.
In a separate and more physically violent case, another woman sought the intervention of the court after a brutal attack by a former partner. This victim recounted a terrifying encounter that occurred after attending an event at a local pub. She described a scene of extreme violence where the man allegedly jumped on top of her, pinning her to the ground. While sitting on her chest, he reportedly wrapped his hands around her neck and strangled her.
In a chilling detail provided to the court, the woman testified that when she warned him he might kill her if he did not stop, the man simply replied that he was aware of the danger. The assault did not end there; the woman alleged that the attacker proceeded to punch her in the face with a closed fist and delivered several kicks to her head and side.
The aftermath of this assault left the woman with a fractured nose and visible marks of strangulation around her neck. She informed Judge Brennan that she had been hospitalized and was still in the process of dealing with the trauma, describing the entire experience as an absolute nightmare. Having reported the incident to the gardaí, she expressed a legitimate fear that the situation could escalate further without legal intervention.
Judge Brennan found the testimony sufficient to justify the necessity of a protection order for her safety. These cases highlight the critical role of the District Family Court in providing immediate relief to victims of domestic abuse. Judge Brennan granted the protection orders on an ex parte basis, meaning the orders were issued based on the testimony of the applicants without the presence of the respondents.
These temporary measures are designed to act as a legal shield, allowing the gardaí to arrest the individuals if they put the protected persons in fear for their safety. Such orders remain in effect until a full hearing can be conducted, ensuring that victims are not left vulnerable while the legal system processes their claims.
The volume of such requests on a single Friday—including allegations of sexual assault and the withholding of basic necessities like baby milk—underscores a persistent and alarming trend of domestic instability and violence
