James McCarthy retires from Dublin duty at 34 years of age with nine All-Ireland titles in a glittering career that spanned 15 seasons

Doing a bit of homework for an All Star football meeting last week, it made sense to watch the Dublin/Galway All-Ireland quarter-final game back again. The idea was to have a look at Con O’Callaghan, who was right in the mix for an All Star, while having a look at a few of the Galway lads who were in with a shout.

Maybe his performance shouldn’t have been a surprise, but at 34 years of age it might not have been anticipated. McCarthy was never one for a holding role. He went and made things happen. He always was. You simply couldn’t take McCarthy off when the game was in the fire and that says it all. When Dublin’s need was greatest he was there driving it on, on the bad days and the good, although there were far more of the latter.

His athleticism was never in question, but plenty of players are athletic. They just didn’t get as much out of themselves or use that athleticism on the pitch anywhere near as often as McCarthy did.
