Laura Carreira’s poignant drama, “ On Falling ,” clinched the coveted Best Film award, captivating audiences with its powerful portrayal of a Portuguese immigrant’s struggles in a Scottish warehouse.
Ross Whitaker’s documentary, “Beat the Lotto,” emerged victorious in the Best Irish Film category, shedding light on the intriguing story of a 1990s lottery syndicate. The Michael Dwyer Discovery Award, a tribute to the late film correspondent of The Irish Times, was bestowed upon the talented trio starring in Claire Frances Byrne's raw social-realist drama, “Ready or Not.” Éamon Little's “Born That Way,” a compelling documentary exploring the life of Patrick Lydon, a pioneering figure in providing care for individuals with diverse needs, was recognized as the Best Irish Documentary. Adrian McCarthy, the film's producer, emphasized the film's crucial message about societal inclusivity, stating, “We genuinely believe there is a message in here about how we treat ‘others’ in our society that the world really needs to hear right now.” Carrie Crowley, a respected actor and television presenter, received the George Byrne Maverick Award, a testament to her unwavering support of the Irish language and her significant contributions to the film industry.The festival was a vibrant showcase of cinematic diversity, featuring premieres from around the globe. India Donaldson’s coming-of-age study “Good One” impressed audiences and critics alike, securing the Best Debut accolade. Andres Veiel’s controversial documentary “Riefenstahl,” delving into the life of the infamous Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl, won the Best Documentary award.
