Ciara, aged 28, requires 24/7 care from her mother Moira and father Paul - but the lack of services and support since the Covid-19 pandemic is a serious issue for families like them, according to Paul Read, here:
Family carers look after their loved ones in their home, often with little to no help from the state. RSVP's new series, Caring For The Carers, chats to family carers across the country to find out about the challenges they face.
Ciara fell and broke her hip last year, and has had to use a wheelchair since then. Prior to this, she was able to walk with some help. Paul says that Ciara is a great daughter and he and Moira love her with all their heart. However, getting the right support for Moira has been a constant battle: “She has great day services, but getting physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and respite has been a struggle.”
Paul believes the lack of respite for carers is a massive issue and funding needs to be specifically ring-fenced to ensure all carers get a break. “There is such a lack of planning. Ciara is 28, they know about her, but if something happened to me or Moira, she would go straight into a nursing home, with people who don’t know her and don’t understand her care needs.”
