A Dublin physiotherapist has been found guilty of professional misconduct and poor professional performance for administering an unlicensed, Botox-like product to clients at his practice. The regulatory body for health and social care professionals in Ireland found that Mr. Castro had administered Liztox, a Korean botulinum toxin product similar to Botox, to three clients and promoted his use of it on social media.

A Dublin-based physiotherapist, Igor Castro, has been found guilty of professional misconduct and poor professional performance for administering an unlicensed, Botox -like product to clients at his practice. The fitness-to-practise committee of CORU, the regulatory body for health and social care professionals in Ireland , found that Mr. Castro had administered Liztox, a Korean botulinum toxin product similar to Botox , to three clients in October 2023.

Furthermore, the committee determined that Mr. Castro had promoted his use of Liztox on his Instagram account between October and November 2023. The committee's findings were based on Mr. Castro's own admissions and the uncontroverted evidence of several witnesses, including a Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) enforcement officer. Chairperson Geraldine Feeney emphasized the seriousness of the findings, stating that they directly affected public safety. She pointed out that Mr. Castro's actions had misled his patients and potentially put them at risk by administering a product outside his scope of practice as a physiotherapist. Ms. Feeney stressed that his lack of care for patient safety was a clear indication of poor professional performance. An expert witness testified that Mr. Castro was not legally qualified to administer an unlicensed product that could be potentially harmful.Ms. Feeney acknowledged that Mr. Castro had cooperated fully with both the HPRA investigation and the subsequent CORU inquiry, admitting to his misconduct and demonstrating insight into his wrongdoing. He also allowed documents to be admitted without formal proof, saving CORU time and resources. Despite these mitigating factors, Ms. Feeney stated that the committee would recommend a sanction to deter future breaches of the code of conduct and maintain public confidence in the physiotherapy profession. This sanction requires formal ratification by the CORU council and confirmation by the High Court if it involves a period of suspension
