Some 96 per cent of Dublin publicans say there needs to be a stronger garda presence in the city.

Publicans are extremely concerned over a lack of policing in the capital, with one pub owner detailing that his customers are being subjected to anti-social behaviour while trying to enjoy a quiet pint.

He said: "We are a capital city, we need the presence of guards 24/7. With the volume of tourists and the traffic that goes through the city we need the stability of yellow vests and garda vans. Since the reopening of pubs following the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr Aherne said he has noticed an increase in anti social behaviour in the city. He said: "There is a menacing group of youths hanging around town going around on scooters or bikes, the drug dealing going on in the city is off the charts.

"We had an incident where a woman stole a few bottles of wine across the road and dropped a bottle of wine, and she was picking up glass and throwing it. We had a German couple and a Spanish lady sitting there and it’s just not acceptable."
