A Dublin woman lost her life savings to a sophisticated online scam where a con artist impersonated Coldplay singer Chris Martin using AI-manipulated videos and a carefully crafted narrative.

A Dublin woman shared her harrowing experience of being scammed out of €25,000 by an online catfish who impersonated famous musician Chris Martin of Coldplay . The finance worker, using the pseudonym Sinead, revealed that she withdrew funds from her pension pot after the con-artist requested support for an orphanage Chris Martin allegedly established, along with expenses for flights to Ireland .

Sinead believes the sophisticated scam involved the use of AI to manipulate videos on Skype, making it appear as if Chris Martin was speaking and interacting with her directly. The impersonator contacted Sinead after she left a comment on the band's X account in 2021. Over time, the scammer cultivated a sense of romance and led her to believe a genuine relationship was developing. Sinead explained how the scammer gained her trust: 'He was very smooth. He'd be humorous in his conversation. He'd be kind with his words towards me. But he did say initially, don't tell anyone that you're talking to me.' He also claimed to be unable to go public about their connection due to his celebrity status. The scammer initially requested smaller sums, ranging from £150 to £400, supposedly for the orphanage. He then escalated his requests to thousands of pounds for flights to Ireland, which Sinead transferred. Finally, he asked for a loan of €22,000, which she agreed to, drafting a loan agreement with a solicitor. The funds were drawn from her pension savings. Sinead felt compelled to help, believing in the scammer's fabricated story and the need for financial assistance. The scammer provided bank account details belonging to a woman, whom Sinead believed was associated with Chris Martin's management team. He claimed their accounts were frozen due to suspended tours and a film project, necessitating his request for a loan. Sinead even purchased presents for the orphans the fake Chris Martin claimed to be supporting. It wasn't until she confided in her brother that the truth began to unravel. He contacted Coldplay's management in London, confirming the scam. Sinead was devastated by the loss and expressed feelings of depression and stupidity.
