Elaine Reynolds left school early and started off as a house keeper in Trinity College Dublin, but she worked her way up to being an Executive Officer with the Trinity Access Programme

Dublin woman Elaine Reynolds left school at 13, but through her own hard work and encouragement from her workplace Trinity College, she went on to earn an honorary Masters degree.

Elaine first started working in Trinity as a housekeeper back in 1996 when she was in her 40s, after a friend told her they were looking for people. "The hours suited, you started very early in the morning and finished about half ten. I could get someone to take the kids to school and then I was home in the evenings for them.

Elaine soon struck up a friendship with a lady called Sheila Flood who worked for the Access Programme. Elaine told her that she had recently started a computer course at night as she wanted to learn how to use the one she recently bought for the house. This changed Elaine's mind, so the next day, she told Sheila she'd take the job. "I told her I'd love to work with her, but I have difficulty with literacy. She said she'd only be asking me to do photocopying and I'd learn as I go along."

Eventually Elaine gave up housekeeping and she was asked to go full time with the Access programme. "I said are you mad! I felt I didn't have the skills they needed, but they taught me on the job. "They gave me so much, encouragement isn't a strong enough word. They do the same thing every day to the students who come in the door. You start to feel like family after a while.
