Last week, distraught staff paid their respects to the zoo's longest-standing resident, Betty the 62-year-old chimpanzee
Distraught zookeepers were given an opportunity to pay their respects and take a moment to say goodbye following the death of Betty the 62-year-old chimpanzee at Dublin Zoo last week.
In a rare insight into what happens behind the scenes when an animal dies at Dublin Zoo, a spokesperson told the Irish Mirror that a respectful protocol is following that keeps in mind the strong bond formed between keepers and their animals. Arrangements are then made with a specialist company to collect the remains for incineration in accordance with EU regulations governing the disposal of animal byproducts.
Team leader Helen Clarke-Bennett first encountered her in the 1970s, when her father looked after the chimpanzees at Dublin Zoo, long before she started working there herself. “As a senior citizen, Betty has been under the constant supervision of Dublin Zoo’s veterinary and animal care teams to manage her wellness. Recently, age-related conditions including chronic arthritis and declining kidney function were a sign that Betty’s awesome longevity was beginning to take its toll on her health.
