Jon Scheyer has been to the ACC championship before. But this one's different. Head of one of the sport's bluest bloods, Scheyer is responsible for everything. And this ACC crown? 'Damn right he’s responsible for that too,' writes BrendanRMarks.
, the No. 1 recruit in the country according to most rankings. “He was really the only coach I was able to build a relationship with; that’s the reason why I came here,” Lively said. “I felt like he was the realest person to me.” That’s why, earlier this season, when Lively was struggling with foul trouble and fit within Duke’s system, Scheyer was able to be brutally honest with him and get a positive response back.
Scheyer’s team certainly did that this week, putting the finishing touches on a nine-game winning streak that currently is among the longest in the nation. It has morphed from a pretty good defensive team into an elite one, a legitimate top-20 side nationally since February began, per BartTorvik. And this week, at long last, the offense rose to a matching level. Against bothand Miami, Duke averaged above 1.325 points per possession, looking more locked in than last season’s Final Four squad.
It isn’t just players with these stories of faith, these seemingly-hyperbolic instincts to trust a first-timer. When Krzyzewski first told his staff he was retiring, several months before it became public, associate head coach Chris Carrawell was in the sixth-floor conference room where it happened — and immediately, he voiced his support for Scheyer as the successor. “I told you he had it,” Carrawell said Saturday. “He’s always had the poise, though, so I shouldn’t be surprised.
That inner ethos is why, despite Duke’s rocky start to this season, Scheyer stayed the course. Through injuries to Lively and Roach and fellow stud recruit, players shuffling in and out of the lineup, the longtime assistant never wavered in the confidence that this would all come together. Some, understandably, might call that naive. Dangerously optimistic, or even delusional.
Scheyer, though, has steered them there. Through blowout losses, through “matters considered closed.”
