Sports Minister Thomas Byrne’s father was player-manager at Dundalk’s County Louth rivals Drogheda United.

Minister for State Thomas Byrne has pledged that Dundalk will receive the €500,000 grant that they applied for under the Sports Capital scheme - as long as the club remains in existence.

The County Meath TD revealed that he had spoken with interim FAI chief executive David Courell on Friday and again on Monday, where the subject of Dundalk’s perilous situation arose. “We’ll make a final announcement in the next two weeks, but there's about 3,500 other applications, so we just haven't finalised all the figures yet.Byrne added that any government monies handed over under the Sports Capital scheme could not be spent on clearing debts or paying player wages.

Byrne added: “Obviously we’ll keep a watching brief on it, but we want the club to be saved, we want the club to maintain an existence and I feel that this will be…“But I thought that when we know it's a valid application, we know it's a good application to give that indication, I think that this is critical junction of the club…

“Look, I'm not happy with the way everything has happened, but look, for the future I think there needs to be, I suppose, a financial test in terms of new owners coming in.
