Duran Duran: 'People don’t want to see you tired and saggy'. 🎵 The band on the real toll of their rock'n'roll heydey, why they've always refused to know their place and how they feel about playing their biggest ever show - in their sixties.

All this coincides with a Covid-extended 40th anniversary victory lap – not that the band are taking too much notice. “Is anyone that bothered?” John asks. “It’s like with. I think people are just kind of bored with people saying, ‘Can you believe these guys are still doing what they’re doing?’”

Always technologically minded, they embraced the burgeoning music-video trend, becoming stars on a new American station called MTV: with videos more like short films – “Hungry Like the Wolf” took inspiration from– Duran Duran became massive in every US state that broadcast the channel. “It was a happy accident,” Roger says. “We were in the right place. We had a certain aesthetic that worked really well.

“I think it looks good,” John says. “So why not? People aspire to go to exotic places and drive fast cars, be educated or cosmopolitan. I’ve never liked the idea of knowing your place.” Their work demands – “We had to learn quickly how to write hit songs, how to play arenas,” John says – were exacerbated by the band’s rock-n-roll lifestyle. “Then you’ve got the drugs and the booze and the girls and the late nights,” John says, “which is really what creates the pressure. If everybody was just doing what they were supposed to, it’d be a pretty easy job. But when you find yourself staying up every night, to get into the studio five days a week is a real challenge.
