Mark Rutte said the Dutch state had 'enabled and stimulated slavery'

THE PRIME Minister of the Netherland has apologised for his country’s role in the slave trade.

The landmark apology, however, was blasted by activists for also not laying out solid plans for reparations for people still dealing with the brutal legacy of slavery which echoed colonial attitudes. Activists also took issue with the timing of the apology and urged the PM to make his address on 1st July – 160 years since the abolition of slavery.
