The new DWP minister for social security and disabilities said over 16,000 people shared their views on the proposed changes

A new minister for the Department of Work and Pensions has issued an update on proposals that could see Personal Independence Payment payments of up to £737 a month replaced with vouchers.

Responding to a question from Labour colleague Cat Smith about the timeline for publishing a response to the consultation, Sir Stephen said in a written response on Monday: "The consultation on the Modernising Support Green Paper closed on Monday 22 July. Over 16,000 responses have been received and we will review these responses."

The Green Paper set out how the DWP might explore different avenues of support for those with disabilities and long-term health conditions beyond regular cash payments. Among the alternatives being considered are catalogue schemes that could allow people to get equipment and aids for free or at a reduced cost and voucher schemes that could see people receive vouchers they can put towards specific costs instead of money.
