Billionaire James Dyson, inventor of the British vacuum cleaner empire, is at the centre of a dispute with locals in County Waterford over access to a graveyard and long-established rights-of-way on his estate.
Waterford City and County Council has now confirmed it is ‘engaging with the landowner’ over 'concerns about access and traditional rights-of-way' at sites used by the local community. Since Dyson purchased the estate, the house has been used by local community groups, and the billionaire has also been praised locally for donating a five-figure sum towards a new playground in nearby Knockanore.that his relations with the community have taken a turn for the worse as access to a graveyard and pathways on the outskirts of his estate has become more restricted.
, the row involves access to Templemichael Castle and graveyard, Molana Abbey, and a car park, operated by the estate, which is used to access both sites. Templemichael graveyard has not been used for burials in many years, however, locals still visit deceased relatives there.
Additionally, both Templemichael and Molana Abbey are popular spots for walks and visits within the wider community. Molana Abbey's access is being restricted, and it is set to close from September 30 until Easter Sunday.
Reportedly, there have been previous disputes regarding access to the sites, however, the more recent restrictions have angered several community members.that opening hours for the car park serving Templemichael graveyard and the abbey have been reduced in recent months, while a barrier has also been put up at the graveyard to restrict access. While some believe this may have been erected to put a stop to anti-social behaviour, the restrictions of access has gone too far.
Waterford council officials are in discussions with Ballynatray House Estate with the aim of resolving the dispute, while legal advisers have also been brought in to help sort the situation. Founded in 1991, Dyson's invention of the same name went on to be hugely successful, and the 79-year-old has topped The Sunday Times Rich List in recent years.
