24 tickets were issued last week
A number of e-scooters were seized in Northampton last week as officers from Northamptonshire Police came down hard on illegal e-scooter and bike riding. Riding privately owned e-scooters is illegal in the UK. Operation Push was launched to highlight dangerous cycling and riding to make Northampton's roads safer, according to Northants Police's Northampton Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Privately owned e-scooters cannot currently be insured or registered as they are not roadworthy, which means it is illegal to ride them anywhere but on private land. Those caught riding them risk a £300 fine and six points on their licence for having no insurance or up to £100 fine and three to six penalty points for riding without the correct licence.
The e-scooters available to hire through Voi are legal to ride as the trial is ongoing. However, riders must have the correct licence and follow rules if they want to avoid a fine. Sgt Tor Lindsay, said: “We want to make our roads and highways safer for everyone and that means tackling dangerous cycling and e-scooters as well as cars and bigger vehicles. Cycling on a footpath may seem fine to some people, but it can be very dangerous for pedestrians.
