Leeds United have had 13 managers or head coaches over the past decade
With three managerial departures during the first half of 2023, Leeds United fans will have been reminded of the Massimo Cellino era at Elland Road, when coaches were likened to watermelons by the club's bombastic Italian former owner.
"I don’t know [why I’ve chosen him]," Cellino said following the appointment of Darko Milanic in 2014."The coaches are like watermelons. You find out about them when you open them. His particularly qualities? He’s good-looking, what can I tell you?" Milanic lasted only a matter of weeks in the Elland Road hotseat and he wasn't the only one. Aside from Marcelo Bielsa, managers athave not much of a shelf-life over the past decade, although in Daniel Farke, the club looked to have appointed a boss with the experience, mentality and gravitas to last the course.Brian McDermott - sacked 30 May 2014
The former Reading boss managed to be sacked twice by Cellino, including a transfer deadline day dismissal in January 2014, which was before the Italian even owned the club. That bizarre turn of events set an apt precedent, with McDermott getting his marching order for real at the end of that season, when United finished in 15th place.
Later that year he returned to Arsenal, his former side as a player, working as a scout for just over a year, when he rejoined Reading as manager. He was sacked after six months and is now the director of football at Hibernian.
