Pasadena soccer team upsets Alief Elsik in shootout
ALIEF - Twice, Pasadena High School’s boys soccer team began storming the field, thinking they had captured a special victory. Twice, the field referee threw his arms up and told them to return to the sidelines.Carlos Alvarenga’s goal handed Pasadena a 4-1 victory in a second shootout, allowing the Eagles to capture the Area championship over Alief Elsik at windy Crump Stadium Tuesday night.
For the two shootouts, Pasadena outscored the Rams 8-5. The two were left in a 4-4 tie after the first shootout. But for the two shootouts, Pasadena’s 10 players found the back of the net in 8-of-9 attempts for 89 percent. Elsik was 5-for-8 for 63 percent. Yes, the hero was obviously Ramirez. Blocking that ball on Elsik’s second attempt during the second shootout preserved a 2-0 lead, a lead that grew to 3-0 on a Victor Lopez goal. Had Elsik’s Wren Marsh failed on his attempt, the match would have been over a bit sooner, but he connected, putting the home’s team’s deficit at 3-1, before Alvarenga’s score.
There was one scary moment during the two 10-minute sessions. In the opening 10 minutes, fancy footwork by Elsik’s Zamir Gonzalez led to a shot that hit the right corner of the goal, before bounding harmlessly away.
