THERE is a photograph in front of me and it has me scratching my head. The picture was taken at the Aviva Stadium and shows three men holding an Irish shirt.
I'm taking that on trust. I do know that they could walk down any street in the country and nobody would have a clue who they are. That's where we are with Irish soccer. Instead, the reaction has been 'who?' Hallgrímsson may turn out to be a good manager who does well with Ireland. Every managerial appointment is a gamble, of course, but this seems to be a particularly big one. Look back at the coverage of that tournament. Lars Lagerbäck was largely seen as the manager, even though himself and Hallgrímsson were joint managers.
It was pretty clear, in my opinion, that O'Shea felt he was in the frame - judging from what he said around the four games in which he was in charge.
