The Coronado School of the Arts graduate won the best actress prize at the Jimmy Awards in New York on Monday
Kendall Becerra grew up in an artistic family, so theater and music always seemed a natural place to focus her talents from the moment she made her stage debut as a “lost boy” in “Peter Pan” at her Catholic grade school.
Becerra, and Jimmy Awards Best Actor winner Nicholas Barrón of San Antonio, each received a $25,000 cash prize Monday from the Nederlander Organization, which sponsors the Jimmy Awards. As part of the competition experience, the 92 teens took part in an intensive series of workshops, coaching and rehearsals leading up to Monday’s show.
The competitors first auditioned for the Jimmy judges on Sunday. Then on Monday evening, the top eight finalists were allowed to sing another song for the judges. Becerra said hearing her name called at the end was an out-of-body experience. This past year, Becerra was also one of 12 national finalists in the English Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition. In August, she’ll head back to New York to attend Marymount Manhattan College, where she plans to study musical theater. She’s also a songwriter and guitarist and hopes to produce some of her own music someday.
