Ecuador ’s presidential race will go to an April 13th runoff if current trends in the count persist, the national electoral council said late on Sunday, as incumbent Daniel Noboa led left-wing candidate Luisa Gonzalez by less than 1 per cent.

Ms Gonzalez, a protege of former president Rafael Correa, has said she would tackle crime with major military and police operations, pursue corrupt judges and prosecutors, and introduce a social spending plan in the most violent areas. For days, Mr Correa and Ms Gonzalez have been decrying what they called plans to commit election fraud, with Ms Gonzalez singling out Ms Atamaint, saying she had allowed Mr Noboa to ignore campaigning rules.He has been embroiled in a long-running spat with his vice president, most recently over whether and how he could take campaign leave.
