Eddie Howe is having a fine time as Newcastle boss and doesn't see himself leaving any time soon
Gareth Southgate may well be asked to stay on as England manager beyond the Euros - with Eddie Howe turning the chance to manage the Three Lions down.
Southgate has been England manager for seven years, taking over from disgraced Sam Allardyce who managed just one England game before being stung by an undercover bribery investigation - to leave him as the only Three Lions boss with a 100 per cent record. Southgate has led England to a World Cup semi-final and a Euro 2020 final, but disappointment in last year’s Nations League and crashing out in Qatar’s quarter-final stage means that his future is in doubt beyond this summer’s tournament, where he has admitted that his future could depend on whether he wins the tournament or not.
The Telegraph report that Howe has given his nation the cold shoulder, with the former Bournemouth gaffer the front runner for the post. Southgate’s contract is up in January 2025, but Howe doesn’t want to move into the international game at this point in his career despite the England job being somewhat appealing.
Steve Cooper and Graham Potter are also candidates, though Cooper is in charge of Nottingham Forest and Potter would wish to return to club management after being sacked by Chelsea towards the end of last season. Further to the point, Newcastle would also reject any FA advances for Howe’s signature, with his deal running through until 2026.
