The 2023 Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year is coming back. Purdue center Zach Edey will return to school next season, he announced Wednesday. More:

Legitimately, I think people don’t realize how close this was to going the other way. Edey had a ton of interest fromteams in the late first and early second-round range. If he had stayed in, I feel confident he would have been a top-40 pick and been on a fully guaranteed roster spot next season. Why? He measured at an elite level at the combine, coming in at over 7-foot-3 without shoes with a 7-foot-10 wingspan and a 9-foot-7.

He’s also an elite character kid that works incredibly hard and has an extremely competitive mindset. He was a late arrival to basketball in his teenage years after growing up playing hockey and baseball in Canada, and has shown a tremendous growth trajectory over the last five years. He might not exactly fit the mold of the archetype NBA teams are looking for, but they still have a ton of interest. —Edey’s return can’t be quantified for the Boilermakers.
